A Construction student is getting the chance to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world projects through his internship with Flooring Junction.
Basil Thadikulangara Alias has secured a 200-hour internship with the leading commercial flooring company. The role involves working with floorplans and estimation software.
Basil says he’s learning a lot from his internship, which is allowing him to see construction processes and materials firsthand.
“Being in the industry has helped me apply my classroom knowledge to real situations and gain practical experience that strengthens my understanding,” he says.
Basil is from Kerala in India. He came to New Zealand to pursue quality education in a country known for its strong construction and infrastructure development sector.
“I’m passionate about construction project management and enjoy learning how theoretical knowledge is applied in real-world projects,” says Basil.
He chose OPAIC because of its practical, hands-on approach to learning, small class sizes, and supportive environment for international students.
“The course content is closely aligned with what the industry expects, which makes it a great place to build a strong foundation.”
Basil says adjusting to a new culture and education system while working part-time in customer service and maintenance roles was challenging at first.
“I overcame this by creating a balanced schedule, staying organised, and asking for help when I needed it - from tutors, friends, and classmates.”
He says highlights of his time at OPAIC have included the approachable tutors, industry-relevant learning, and opportunities to build connections.
“I also appreciate the multicultural environment, which has helped me grow personally and professionally.”
After he graduates, Basil hopes to become a Quantity Surveyor and eventually move into project or cost management roles in the construction industry.
His advice to current and future students is to make the most of their time here.
“Engage in class, take your assignments seriously, and get involved in the industry early if you can. Internships and part-time jobs can give you a big head start. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek support when needed.”
